Mercury going into retrograde is a phenomenon we have observed from Earth for thousands of years and found meaning in. Most simply, if you’re looking at it from Earth, it’s an optical illusion that happens between three and four times a year that makes Mercury appear to move in a backward motion to what it usually does. From ancient astronomers in the seventh century, to today’s TikTok FYPs, we’ve been blaming this astrological moment for our interpersonal problems.
Why are we scared every time Mercury goes into retrograde? The planet Mercury is believed to influence communication. When it moves in a retrograde motion, it’s supposed to trigger more negative impacts, from work miscommunications to anxiety and friendship fallouts.
One of the major concerns when Mercury is moonwalking is when people embark on a new relationship. Will it be fraught with misreadings and miscommunication? As a professional astrologer, I’m here to tell you that not all hope is lost. Though retrograde can bring misunderstandings, travel issues, and brain fog, that doesn’t mean we have to put aside finding love during this time. I always tell my clients: Life has to go on no matter what eclipse, full moon, or retrograde is happening. Putting your best foot forward and being present is always essential, wherever Mercury is in the sky.
In 2025, we’ll experience Mercury in retrograde three times: March 15 to April 7, July 17 to August 10, and November 9 to 29. Every retrograde has different rules, due to the signs and other planets at play.
This time around, Mercury retrograde occurs in the signs of tempestuous Aries and tender Pisces. From March 15 to 29, we’ll be more impulsive than ever when Mercury is moving backward in Aries, so we have a high potential of pulling in someone new in relationships. The caveat is that they could be a past life connection, explaining the immediate familiarity. With Mercury backflipping from March 29 to April 7 in Pisces, we’ll be looking for someone to complete us; if you’re already committed, this marks the deepening of the relationship. If exes reappear, a second chance could be possible.
Here’s how to COAP in dating during the retrograde:
C is for communication, which you should always make time for.
O is for overanalyzing, which you should not do.
A is for adventure, because you should plan to go with the flow.
P is for the patience one must have when dealing with delays or issues.
If problems currently exist, the cosmos highlights them by asking us to decide whether or not we wish to proceed with the relationship during Mercury in retrograde. (The same applies to Venus retrograde.) The good news is that we can repair matters. It depends on how much energy we want to reignite the romance. As you might have guessed, breakups aren’t permanent now—usually, people want a temporary moment to comprehend their emotions. At one point or another, they’ll slide right back into our DMs and ask for forgiveness.
Remember that pre and post-retrograde, which is what I call “retroshade,” is when we feel the effects in our relationships the most because Mercury is creeping forward at a slower pace. The retroshade is March 1 to 15 and April 7 to 26. The two weeks before and after the retrograde give us a chance to overthink matters and assess if we’re on the right path in partnerships.
So that’s it: Finding love during Mercury retrograde is very, very real! Just be open to the possibilities.
